This is Aside Manga News for September 4th, 2026.
This past Thursday, as part of Amazon Prime Video Japan’s promotional junket, the next movie in The Silent Service live action adaptation was previewed. The new movie’s translated title is The Silent Service – Awaken, New York and will be streaming internationally in Summer 2027. A trailer showing scenes from the movie was also shown and is streaming on YouTube.
The first season consists of 8 episodes, each about 45 minutes in length. The “Season 2” is a full length movie under the title of “The Battle of Arctic Ocean.” Both of these live action adaptations cover roughly the first 18 volumes of the manga series. The manga series, created by Kaiji Kawaguchi, ran in Kodansha’s Weekly Morning magazine between 1988 through 1996. The original print release for the series had a total of 32 volumes and has sold over 32 million copies between print and digital releases. There is currently no English release for the original manga, so international fans only have this live action adaptation as a way to experience the story. For this live action adaptation, the producers are committed to adapting the entire core story. They noted that this upcoming movie is heading “towards its climax”, so an additional movie or TV series would likely be needed to complete the story. Unlike the previous portions of the adaptation, this movie will be released directly on Amazon Prime and will not have a theatrical run in Japan first. Fans can watch both of these seasons on Amazon Prime Video with English subtitles right now prior to the new movie releasing next summer.
