This is Aside Manga News for June 23rd, 2026.
50 years ago, back in 1976, starting with a oneshot chapter in issue 29 of Weekly Shonen Jump the Kochikame manga series was first born. In issue 42 of that same year, the full serialization of the manga began, which would run continuously, without missing a single issue, until 2016 for a total of 1958 chapters. This was a forty year serialization and had 200 volumes of manga.
Since its conclusion, there has been additional oneshot chapters being published in Weekly Shonen Jump. Enough chapters that a volume 201 was published back in 2021.
But the series has since continued to have additional chapters and stories produced. In the upcoming issue 36 of Weekly Shonen Jump, a new oneshot will be published in the magazine. This issue comes out on August 3rd in Japan. Since 2017, with the exception one year, the series has had at least one oneshot published in Weekly Shonen Jump around this time.
Even with Osamu Akimoto, the series author, still publishing another manga series, Mr. Clice in Jump SQ Rise magazine, there is now enough chapters of Kochikame to be published in volume editions again. Volume 202 will be published on September 4th and volume 203 on October 2nd.
With such a depth of a series, now celebrating it’s 50th anniversary, a search engine called “Turtle” has been created. You can type in any character or line from the manga and the search engine will find the exact manga panel where it occurred. There is also some limited tag searches that can be done, such as panels with no text or by a character’s name. The search engine only has the first 100 volumes cataloged, but they will be adding more volumes and an enhanced tag search later in the year. Fans are encouraged to share their favorite panels via social media.
While the Kochikame manga has not been licensed for English release, fans can still enjoy the series in two alternate ways. The first 50 episodes of the 1996 anime series can be streamed on “It’s Anime” YouTube channel from REMOW. 51 episodes of the English subtitled series also available for free streaming on Tubi TV.
Coming out later this year will be the videogame KochiKame: Ryo-san’s Billion-yen Beat from Shueisha Games. It will be available in English, Japanese, and Chinese on most gaming platforms as well as mobile devices. The exact release date hasn’t been announced yet but more information about the game is likely to come out soon as the celebrations for Kochikame’s 50th anniversary continues later this year.
